What happens when a domain expires, and how recovery works

Summary

Domain lifecycle rules vary by TLD/Registry. This policy explains typical phases after expiry and the recovery options available through GetOn.

Your responsibility

Keep your contact email accurate and renew before expiry. Recovery may be impossible once a domain is released.

Typical Lifecycle

  1. Active — domain resolves normally.
  2. Expired — services may stop; renewal may still be possible.
  3. Grace — renewal may be possible with/without fees (varies).
  4. Redemption — restoration may be possible with an additional restoration fee (varies).
  5. Pending Delete / Delete — restoration typically not possible; domain prepares for release.
  6. Released — domain becomes publicly available again.

Grace Periods

Grace periods are set by the Registry. During grace, you may be able to renew the domain in your account.

Domains may stop resolving during expiry/grace depending on the TLD and nameserver/DNS settings.

Redemption / Restoration

After grace, some TLDs enter redemption. Restoring typically requires a special request and fees from the Registry. Restoration is not guaranteed.

Deletion & Release

Once a domain enters pending delete (or equivalent), it generally cannot be renewed or restored and will be released after the Registry process completes.

Recovery Process (How to Request)

  1. Log in and attempt renewal if available.
  2. If renewal is not available, contact support with the domain name and account details.
  3. We will confirm whether the Registry allows restoration and quote any applicable fees.

Governing Law

This policy is governed by the laws of Malaysia, in addition to mandatory Registry/ICANN lifecycle rules for the applicable TLD.
